In this video, Zoe Kiefer, a research associated from Iowa State University department of animal science, describes her research on biological factors associated with pelvic organ prolapse in late gestation sows. This video focuses on the vaginal microbiome of commercial sows.
Sows are classified as high or low risk for prolapse and the vaginal microbiome is analyzed for differences. The Improving Pig Survivability Project is a 5-year, interdisciplinary, multi-university project funded by the National Pork Board (NPB) and Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) aimed at reducing mortality in the U.S. swine industry.
