3-in-1: Making easier work while keeping the pigs healthy.
The vibe and conversations at this year’s World Pork Expo held in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 7-9, 2023, were quite different from years past. Over the past couple of years producers have been concerned with the labor shortage. Still, profit margins were favorable to increasing employee wages. However, this year producers are facing the reality of California’s Prop 12 initiation and tight margins.
However, to meet the needs of the producers, Merck Animal Health released Circumvent® C-M-L, a 3-in-1 vaccine to create a win-win for swine producers. CIRCUMVENT CML is the first ready-to-use, single-dose vaccine effective against disease caused by Porcine Circovirus Types 2a and 2d, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Lawsonia intracellularis in pigs, three weeks of age or older. With CIRCUMVENT CML, veterinarians and producers can vaccinate for three of the most critical swine disease concerns, all in one bottle with no mixing or reconstituting.

To learn more about Circumvent® C-M-L, our own Dr. Casey Bradley visited with Merck’s Dr. Brett O’Brien. Merck has been leading the way in vaccine development and animal health protection. Still, producers have faced the need for multiple vaccinations to keep our swine herds protected. The continued disease pressures have created a labor-intensive management strategy for producers. Instead of giving three different vaccinations, Circumvent CML combines 3-in-1 in a single 2 mL dose. Even though Merck Animal Health already had these vaccines on the market, they still faced the exact regulatory requirements to show efficacies for all three diseases and safety for each component. Since USDA license approval in 2022, the 3-in-1 vaccine has been tested in thousands of pigs, demonstrating its capability of keeping pigs healthy and reducing labor costs.
During the interview, Dr. O’Brien discussed the role of the vaccine’s adjuvant, Microsol Diluvac Forte® (MDF), which utilizes a dual oil immersion with Vitamin E and Mineral Oil. The vitamin E coats the micelles for greater antigen exposure and a more robust immune stimulation. The MDF adjuvant is a balance between unwanted immunological responses and immune stimulation.
Additionally, Circumvent CML’s label claims are designed to give veterinarians the flexibility for administration, starting as early as 3-weeks of age. This flexibility is essential for the vaccination to be given before the animal is exposed to the disease challenge. “We though, as veterinarians, also try to balance, if there is an option to spread that out (vaccination administration), we want to do what is best for the pigs at the end of the day.” Dr. O’Brien further suggests the importance of working with your veterinarian to determine the best approach for your system to avoid maternal antibody interferences and duration of protection.
