For Brenden Sieren, 16, working with show pigs is more than just a job—it’s a passion that he envisions turning into a career. Raised on his family’s farm in Crawford County, Iowa, Brenden has been immersed in the world of show pigs since he started in 4-H at the age of 9. Today, he works for Donscheski Show Pigs in Dunlap, Iowa, where he’s gaining hands-on experience in everything from feeding practices to genetics.
Brenden’s daily routine during the summer involves feeding and caring for pigs at home, then heading to Dunlap to help with chores. He takes pride in learning about the nuances of raising and preparing pigs for show, a process he finds both challenging and rewarding.
His involvement in the industry extends beyond just hands-on work. Brenden has enjoyed success in the show ring and sees it as a valuable networking opportunity. He frequently attends fairs and industry events, learning from others in the business and building relationships that he equates to family. His younger sister Avery shares this interest, and together they’re building on the family tradition of working with livestock.
In addition to his work with pigs, Brenden is active in other agricultural activities, including trapshooting and FFA, further broadening his exposure to the industry. Looking to the future, he plans to continue his education, possibly attending Des Moines Area Community College to pursue livestock and agriculture courses. He dreams of one day starting his own show pig business and further deepening his ties to the agricultural community.
At the heart of it all, Brenden values the personal connections he’s formed through the show pig industry. “Once you get to know people in this business, they feel like family,” he says. It’s these relationships, combined with his passion for livestock, that make him excited about the future.
With a focus on learning and a drive to succeed, Brenden Sieren is on a path to not only build a career in the show pig industry but also contribute to the agricultural community he loves. His journey from a young 4-H participant to an aspiring entrepreneur highlights the importance of passion, hard work, and strong connections in the world of livestock.
