Weekly Hog Market Overview – September 13, 2024

Ontario Market: The Ontario hog market saw a slight decline in prices across the board for the week ending September 13, 2024:

  • The 100% Base Formula Price dropped to $209.60/cwt, continuing its downward trend from $224.03/cwt a month earlier.
  • The average dressed weight of market hogs increased slightly to 106.79 kg, while the number of hogs sold saw a significant rise to 112% of the previous year’s figure, totaling 98,859 hogs.
  • Weaned pig values dropped to $54.50/pig, and feeder pig values fell to $86.46/pig.

Canadian Market:

  • The Canadian dollar closed at $0.7361 USD, a slight decline from the previous week.
  • Quebec Pool Prices continued to decline, ending the week at $202.40/cwt, down from $212.83/cwt in mid-August.
  • Manitoba hog values also decreased to $224.25/cwt.
  • National hog slaughter numbers saw a decline to 363,275 for the week, maintaining 99% of last year’s slaughter rates.

U.S. Market:

  • Federally inspected hog slaughter increased to 2,571,000 for the week, a rise from the previous week, representing 101% of last year’s figure.
  • Sow slaughter continued its decline, with numbers down 3.8% from the previous year.
  • Early weaned pigs saw a significant price increase, averaging $38.64/pig, up from $33.75 the previous week.
  • The 40-pound feeder pig price also increased to $55.08/pig.
  • The CME lean hog futures for October 2024 closed at $78.45/cwt, and the December contract ended at $71.30/cwt.
  • The pork carcass cutout value fell to $94.30/cwt, down from $99.69/cwt in mid-August.

Feed Market:

  • Corn prices rose to $4.13/bushel, while soybean meal increased slightly to $632/tonne.
  • Western Ontario feed corn prices increased to $230.99/tonne, reflecting higher input costs for producers.

Summary of Imports and Exports:

  • Feeder pig imports from Canada into the U.S. increased to 91,749 pigs, with the majority entering through North Dakota.
  • Market pig imports also saw a rise to 27,510 pigs, with most entering through Michigan and New York.
