Study Shows Iowa Pork Industry is Vital to State’s Economy

A newly released study by the Iowa Pork Producers Association highlights the critical role Iowa’s pork industry plays in the state’s economy, solidifying its status as the top pork-producing state in the nation. With Iowa providing 33% of the U.S. hog inventory and supporting over 120,000 jobs, the findings underscore the industry’s significance as a cornerstone of Iowa’s agricultural economy.

Driving Economic Impact

Iowa’s 5,172 pig farms contribute significantly to job creation and economic activity. Key findings from the study include:

  • $15.4 billion in value added to Iowa’s economy.
  • 120,231 jobs supported statewide.
  • $8.0 billion in household income.
  • $40.5 billion in total sales.
  • $2.7 billion in taxes paid.

The economic impact breaks down as follows:

  • $9.9 billion from hog production.
  • $3.9 billion from hog slaughter.
  • $1.5 billion from hog processing.

“The pork industry is the backbone of Iowa’s agricultural economy, driving billions in economic impact, creating thousands of jobs, and feeding millions of people across the world,” said Matt Gent, president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association and a pig farmer from Wellman, IA.

Feeding the Nation and Sustaining the Land

Iowa’s abundant feed supply, coupled with advanced farming practices, makes it an ideal hub for pork production. An average pig consumes 12 bushels of corn and 2.5 bushels of soybeans before reaching market weight, with Iowa pigs consuming crops from more than 2.2 million acres of farmland annually.

In addition to feeding millions, the pork industry contributes to environmental sustainability through the use of hog manure as a natural fertilizer. This practice not only enriches soil and boosts crop yields but also reduces reliance on synthetic fertilizers, creating a self-sustaining cycle for Iowa farms.

Local Impact

The counties leading Iowa in hog inventory include Washington, Sioux, and Lyon, each home to over one million pigs. These and other counties benefit from the industry’s value-added contributions, with nine counties generating more than $300 million in economic activity from pork production.

A Legacy of Excellence

With Iowa’s hog cash receipts reaching $9.328 billion in 2023, the state accounts for 34.3% of U.S. hog cash receipts and 22.9% of Iowa’s total commodity receipts. These figures reflect the enduring commitment of Iowa’s pig farmers to innovation, sustainability, and excellence.
