Canada’s Pork Industry Renews Commitment to Swine Welfare Research

Canada’s pork industry has taken a significant step forward in supporting swine welfare by renewing its financial investment in the University of Saskatchewan’s Chair in Swine Welfare. The five-year commitment underscores the industry’s dedication to advancing research, improving animal welfare, and ensuring the sustainability of pork production.

Dr. Yolande Seddon, a leader in swine behavior and welfare, will continue to head the program at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Her research focuses on practical strategies to enhance animal well-being, including early-life management, stress reduction, and the development of welfare indicators. The insights gained from her work aim to drive meaningful improvements across Canada’s pork sector.

This initiative is backed by a consortium of 14 key industry players, including major producers and processors, all collaborating to ensure the research directly benefits the industry. By prioritizing innovation and ethical practices, the Canadian pork sector reinforces its position as a global leader in responsible pork production.

The renewed investment reflects a shared vision for progress, where animal welfare is a cornerstone of success. This partnership not only elevates the standards of care for pigs but also strengthens consumer trust and industry sustainability. Canada’s pork producers are setting a powerful example of how collaboration and research can shape a more ethical and prosperous future.
