NOVUS and DPP Partner to Honor Swine Educators at 2025 International Symposium.
Nominations are now open worldwide for the inaugural NOVUS Distinguished Academic Training & Innovation Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to swine education.
This prestigious award, presented in partnership with the 16th International Symposium on Digestive Physiology of Pigs (DPP), will be awarded at the event held May 20-23, 2025, in the United States. In addition to global recognition, the recipient will receive $7,500 in support of their continued academic efforts.
Advancing Swine Science Through Academic Leadership
NOVUS and DPP have joined forces to underscore the critical role of academic leadership and innovation in advancing swine science. Marisol Castillo, executive manager of Global Swine Solutions at NOVUS, emphasized the alignment between DPP’s reputation and the award’s objectives.
“DPP is known for its rigorous scientific focus, making it the perfect venue to recognize academic excellence,” says Castillo. “This award—the first of its kind for NOVUS’ swine team—acknowledges the vital work of educators who are shaping the future of the industry.”
A Shared Commitment to Scientific Innovation
Dr. Thomas E. Burkey, Ph.D., professor and associate dean at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, serves as president of the DPP-North America Board of Directors. He highlights the shared vision of NOVUS and DPP in fostering innovation and education within the swine industry.
“NOVUS has a strong history of supporting academic excellence, particularly in areas like nutrition and physiology,” says Burkey. “This award strengthens that commitment by celebrating educators who integrate cutting-edge research into their teaching.”
Who Can Apply?
The award is open to educators at higher education institutions worldwide who have made significant contributions to the academic and professional growth of undergraduate and/or graduate students in swine-related fields, including:
- Digestive physiology of pigs
- Swine nutrition
- Nutritional biochemistry
- Nutrient metabolism
Ideal nominees will effectively blend scientific rigor with practical applications, inspiring students through innovative teaching methods and mentorship.
“We’re looking for educators who not only engage students but also push the boundaries of research in ways that directly address challenges in the pork industry,” says Burkey. “Their work in the classroom, on the farm, and in the lab could lead to the next major breakthroughs in swine science.”
Castillo agrees, adding, “These educators are shaping the next generation of industry professionals, and this award is our way of celebrating their impact.”
Beyond the Prize: Recognition and Industry Impact
Winning the award offers more than just financial support; it elevates the recipient’s professional standing, enhances visibility in both academic and industry circles, and reinforces the crucial role educators play in driving scientific progress.
“This recognition not only honors individual educators but also highlights the importance of strong academic foundations in our industry,” says Burkey. “It fosters collaboration, inspires innovation, and encourages educators to explore new teaching and research initiatives.”
