Cultivating livestock and community: Interview with Eric Meyers, Farm Manager, Maschhoffs’ Holbrook Farrowing Farm in Holbrook, Nebraska

From classroom to barn: a new path

Eric Meyers began his journey with aspirations of teaching and coaching, but after almost three decades, he found his true vocation in an unexpected field: pork production. Rather than instructing students in a classroom or on the sports field, he is now nurturing the next generation of livestock caregivers at the Maschhoffs’ Holbrook Farrowing Farm in Holbrook, Nebraska.

Transitioning into this new career, Meyers initially took on a caregiver role and has since advanced to farm manager. He reflects on his unconventional path, saying, “I studied to be a teacher and a coach. While this isn’t what I envisioned, I’ve discovered a deep passion for what I do. Witnessing growth — both in others and in myself — is incredibly fulfilling.”

Growing up in Nebraska, Meyers was immersed in agriculture, with his grandfather and uncle raising pigs. This early exposure played a pivotal role in shaping his career. “Working on the family farm instilled a strong connection to agriculture in me,” he shares.

Prioritizing pig health

For Meyers, the health and well-being of the pigs are paramount. He emphasizes the importance of creating an environment where pigs thrive, ensuring they have access to food, water, ventilation and medical care when needed. Collaborating closely with Zoetis pork production specialists and veterinarians, he is responsible for the health and efficiency of the Holbrook farm operation. “The care of these animals is our top priority,” he asserts. “They are our livelihood. If we don’t care for them properly, our industry suffers.”

Innovation is key to staying competitive in the pork industry, and Meyers has witnessed significant advancements during his 27 years in the field. “From hand-feeding to advanced feeding systems that track each animal’s needs, the industry is constantly evolving. Just when I think I’ve mastered it, I realize there’s always more to learn,” he explains.

Equally essential to his success is fostering strong relationships with his team and industry partners. “Building trust with my crew and suppliers is vital. We can’t achieve our goals without a solid foundation of respect and collaboration,” he says. “My crew is like family — we spend more time together than we do with our own families. When we trust each other, the work becomes much more manageable.”

A passion for providing

Meyers takes pride in providing food for millions, including his own family, which motivates him daily. “That’s the driving force behind my work,” he says.
