Saskatchewan Pork Producers Encouraged to Develop On-Farm Emergency Response Plans

The Saskatchewan Pork Development Board (Sask Pork) is urging pork producers to establish comprehensive On-Farm Emergency Response Plans to effectively manage potential crises, such as disease outbreaks, barn fires, or transportation accidents. To support this initiative, Sask Pork is offering an $800 incentive per premises for producers who develop these plans.

In collaboration with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and the Animal Health Emergency Management Project, Sask Pork is hosting an online workshop on February 27, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This workshop aims to provide producers with the necessary tools and knowledge to create and implement effective emergency response strategies.

Jennifer Woods, an animal care and livestock handling specialist with J. Woods Livestock Services, emphasizes the importance of preparedness in situations requiring mass euthanasia. She notes that having a well-structured plan ensures that all involved parties understand their roles, the necessary contacts, and the procedures to maintain animal welfare and human safety during such events.

Producers interested in participating in the workshop or seeking more information can contact Sask Pork at 306-244-7752.
