SHIC Expands Disease Monitoring with New ‘Facilities’ Category

The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) has introduced a new “Facilities” category to its Domestic Swine Disease Monitoring Report, broadening surveillance efforts for Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) and Porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV). This enhancement now includes monitoring PCR tests from truck washes, vehicles, and packing plants, providing a more comprehensive view of disease presence beyond farm sites.

Recent findings indicate increased positivity rates for PEDV and PDCoV in off-farm facilities, highlighting potential risks from external sources. Additionally, regional trends show higher-than-expected positivity rates in certain areas, reinforcing the need for enhanced biosecurity measures.

The latest report also shows a decline in PRRSV case positivity in wean-to-finish sites; however, the rapid spread of the lineage 1C.5 strain is reaching record levels. Influenza A cases are also rising across all age groups, with wean-to-finish sites experiencing the highest positivity rates.

By expanding monitoring beyond farm boundaries, this update provides a more detailed understanding of swine disease trends, helping producers implement proactive health and biosecurity strategies.
