In early December 2024, Manitoba reported its first and only case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) for the year in a finisher operation located in southeastern Manitoba. This incident activated the province’s PED Elimination Plan, which has since demonstrated its effectiveness in containing the outbreak to a single farm.
Jenelle Hamblin, Director of Swine Health with Manitoba Pork, highlighted the swift response initiated upon suspicion of PED. Even before laboratory confirmation, the affected premises were placed under strict biocontainment measures, including enhanced biosecurity protocols and restricted movement, as outlined in the elimination plan.
Hamblin expressed pride in the sector’s proactive approach, stating, “We haven’t seen any spillover to any other premises at this point.” She credited the industry’s adherence to the PED action plan and the collective efforts to safeguard neighboring farms.
Over a month has passed since the initial case, with no additional infections reported. This outcome underscores the plan’s efficacy and the industry’s commitment to maintaining stringent biosecurity measures. Hamblin remains optimistic, attributing the success to the sector’s dedication and the robust strategies implemented to manage and eliminate PED threats.
