The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) celebrated the recipients of the prestigious 2024 Master Pork Awards during the Iowa Pork Congress banquet on January 22 in Des Moines. These awards recognize individuals and families for their exceptional contributions to Iowa’s pork industry, highlighting outstanding production practices, adherence to We Care® principles, and meaningful community involvement.
The We Care® principles focus on upholding the highest standards of animal care, food safety, environmental stewardship, and ethical practices. Co-sponsored by IPPA and Iowa State University Extension, the Master Pork Producers program celebrates the expertise and dedication of Iowa’s pork producers, showcasing their vital role in agriculture and the broader community.
Master Pork Producer Honorees:
The 83rd class of honorees joins over eight decades of awardees, representing Iowa’s rich history of excellence and innovation in pork production. This year’s recipients include:
- Brad Meyer, Rock Rapids
- Chad & Renee Adams, Monticello
- Doug Gruver, Sully
- Jeremy Ahlers, Remsen
- Josh & Megan Volante, Clutier
- Kevin & Devin Lux, Cherokee
- Matt & Michelle Thoma, Independence
- Mike & Megan Loecke, Manchester
- Pat & Krista Gent, Wellman
- Jake Knepper, Jesup (posthumously)
Since its inception in 1942, the program has recognized 1,533 Iowa pig farming businesses as Master Pork Producers.
“These awards honor the best of Iowa’s pork production – those driven by passion and committed to providing safe, high-quality protein to the world,” said Brielle Smeby, IPPA’s Producer Outreach Director. “Iowa’s success as the top pork-producing state is a testament to the resilience and dedication of our hardworking producers.”

The banquet also highlighted other outstanding contributors to Iowa’s pork industry:
- Honorary Master Pork Producers:
- Mike Naig: Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture since 2018, Naig has been a steadfast advocate for the swine industry, addressing key issues like foreign animal disease preparedness and promoting Iowa agriculture.
- Kent Mowrer (posthumously): Known for his work with the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, Mowrer was a mentor and advocate for livestock producers, providing practical advice and guidance.
- Iowa Environmental Steward Award:
- Mike Ver Steeg, Inwood: Recognized for his commitment to sustainable pork production and innovative environmental practices.
- Master Seedstock Producer Award:
- Ken & Austin Lane, Spragueville: The Lane family operates a thriving Berkshire swine operation and supports niche marketing through Berkwood Farms, providing high-quality pigs for youth exhibitors and specialty markets.
- Master Pork Partner Awards:
- Bob Ries, Manchester – Driver of the Year
- Dan Weber, Waukon – Partner of the Year
- Dr. Bob Blomme, Audubon – Veterinarian of the Year
- Dr. Justin Kuecker, Algona – Veterinarian of the Year
- Pork All-American Award:
- Steven Doeden, Cleghorn: From managing hog sites to running a manure hauling business, Doeden’s dedication to farming and community involvement exemplifies the spirit of Iowa’s pork producers.
The Master Pork Awards program reflects the strength, diversity, and collaboration within Iowa’s pork industry. These producers and partners, nominated by their peers, exemplify excellence and innovation in their field.
