Iowa Select Farms recently celebrated two of its dedicated employees, Mikey Shields and Gabe McWilliams, for their remarkable service and contributions to the pork production industry.
Mikey Shields, a valued team member for 30 years, began his career as an animal caretaker and is now the manager of a 4,300-head sow farm in southern Iowa. Over the years, Mikey has witnessed the pork industry evolve, taking pride in creating a workplace where employees feel empowered and supported. “I love working with pigs, but what I enjoy most is the people I’ve met here,” Mikey said. Known for his approachable and dedicated nature, Mikey strives to mentor and develop his team, helping them grow in their roles. His passion for building a strong workplace community extends beyond the farm, as he is equally committed to making a positive impact in the local communities.
Outside of work, Mikey enjoys following the Dallas Cowboys and Iowa Hawkeyes, spending time with his family, and traveling with his wife, Shelly. They are proud parents of two children: Tessa, who recently received her doctorate, and John, named Iowa Soldier of the Year in 2023.
Gabe McWilliams, who joined Iowa Select Farms 15 years ago, has worked in nearly every phase of pork production. From his early start showing pigs at county fairs through 4-H, Gabe’s passion for swine care has only grown. After being encouraged by his cousin to apply for a job at Iowa Select Farms, Gabe turned his childhood passion into a fulfilling career. He has since developed an appreciation for all aspects of pig care, from sow farms to transportation, and is now an essential caretaker in the farrowing department at Ringgold Sow 28.
“I focus on doing the right thing for the pigs and the farm,” Gabe said, reflecting on the pride he takes in his role. Caring for newborn piglets and sows brings him a great sense of accomplishment. When he’s not on the farm, Gabe enjoys working on demolition derby cars, attending truck and tractor pulls, and cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones with friends and family.
These two individuals exemplify the values and dedication that drive Iowa Select Farms. The company extends its heartfelt thanks to both Mikey and Gabe for their years of service and continued contributions to the success of the farm.
