Illinois native Tyler Main is making his mark as a sixth-generation pork producer, continuing a family legacy that spans generations. Located in Altona, Illinois, the Main family farm raises 16,000 to 20,000 market hogs annually, with Tyler working alongside his father and uncle to manage the operation.
A Life Rooted in Agriculture
Tyler’s journey in agriculture began early, helping with chores, working in the farrowing house, and even running the grain cart during harvest by age 12. After earning an associate degree at Black Hawk East and a bachelor’s degree in agronomy at Illinois State University, Tyler returned to the farm full-time in 2016.
In addition to raising hogs, Tyler farms corn and soybeans and maintains a small cattle operation, diversifying his contributions to the agricultural sector.
The Everyday Life of a Pork Producer
For Tyler, no two days are the same. From feeding and vaccinating pigs to hauling grain and making feed, the demands of pork production require constant dedication. Winter months bring unique challenges, including the heightened risk of disease spread among livestock. Biosecurity measures, such as changing clothes and boots between barns, are critical to maintaining herd health.
“There’s always something to do when working with swine,” Tyler says. “The variety keeps it exciting, but it also requires diligence to ensure the health and well-being of our animals.”
Family and Community Involvement
Tyler’s wife, Elise, shares his passion for agriculture. An agriculture teacher for junior high and high school students, she also supports farm operations by running equipment during harvest. Elise frequently brings students to the family farm, offering hands-on learning experiences about pork production and agriculture.
The couple is eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child in March, a new chapter for their family and the farm’s future.
Beyond the farm, Tyler is deeply engaged in his community. He serves on the Knox County Corn Growers board, volunteers for the Altona Fire Department, and is active with the Illinois Pork Producers and Knox County Pork Producers.
Building the Future of Agriculture
Tyler’s dedication to agriculture goes beyond daily farm operations. By mentoring young students and actively contributing to his community, he is shaping the future of the pork industry while honoring the traditions of his family farm.
“I want to ensure that the next generation understands the importance of agriculture and the opportunities it provides,” Tyler says.
When he’s not working, Tyler enjoys golfing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends, recharging to tackle the ever-changing demands of life on the farm.
