The Norsvin Duroc has been available in Canada since late 2015. Since that time, it has
been well accepted by producers across Canada. It is also well accepted in other parts of
the world including the USA, where Norsvin has had a presence for many years prior to
the merger with Topigs in 2014. Through a very intense selection process, genetic
progress, and the right tools being applied, the new TN Duroc is the result of these
efforts.
The TN Duroc has always been bred for efficiency in production and meat quality. It is
recognized and registered as a purebred Duroc boar by National Swine Registry (NSR),
USA and pork produced by the TN Duroc is considered Certified DUROC® Pork. It meets
all the requirements for the Japanese colour score and intramuscular fat.
The TN Duroc is bred to be in the lean market segment giving producers the best in
efficiency, grading and meat quality. Regular meat quality testing is performed on Topigs
Norsvin lines including the TN Duroc. Monthly blind taste testing and evaluations are also
done.
The very best Norsvin Duroc and Norsvin Landrace semen has been imported into Canada from Norway on a weekly basis to the Canadian nucleus farms since January of 2020. This has made a huge impact on the performance of the boars and their offspring. The best boars from the Manitoba nucleus farm are distributed to AI studs across Canada.
In the past three years the Canadian TSI (Topigs Selection Index) has increased approximately 20 to 25 TSI points due to the Norwegian semen being imported weekly. Currently the highest indexing TN Duroc boar outside of Norway is WINB5575 with a TSI of 144. This boar was raised in the Manitoba nucleus and is at the Carlo Genetics AI stud.
The demand is high for TN Duroc across Canada. The performance achieved by producers is very good and will only get better in the future. It is available at all studs across Canada
