Pork Industry Keeps a Watchful Eye on H5N1 Developments

The pork industry is actively monitoring the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1), emphasizing the importance of preparedness while reassuring consumers about the safety of pork products.

Dr. Brett Kaysen of the National Pork Board addressed the issue during the 2025 Iowa Pork Congress, noting that H5N1 is a concern following an isolated case in a backyard pig in Oregon. This comes after widespread outbreaks in the poultry and dairy industries.

“It’s important to note that H5N1 doesn’t currently have a daily impact on pork producers,” Kaysen explained, emphasizing that vigilance remains key in protecting the swine sector from potential risks.

Proactive Collaboration Across Industries
National Pork Board CEO Bill Even highlighted the proactive efforts underway, which include collaboration with the poultry and dairy sectors as well as the USDA to ensure the industry is ready to respond if necessary.

“Fortunately for the pork industry, we haven’t experienced any issues,” Even stated. He reassured consumers that, even if H5N1 were to affect the pork sector, pork products would remain safe to eat.

Reinforcing Preparedness
The pork industry continues to work closely with animal health experts, government agencies, and researchers to monitor developments and maintain a strong biosecurity framework. This includes exploring ways to enhance diagnostic capabilities, improve biosecurity measures, and ensure continuity of business in case of future challenges.

While H5N1 has not posed a direct threat to the pork industry, the lessons learned from the poultry and dairy outbreaks underline the importance of preparedness and cross-industry collaboration to protect the U.S. food supply.
